The Rev. Carol Scott was a member of Buford First UMC in 1989 when she
experienced the call to go into full time ministry. It was a difficult transition for Carol when she gave up a
full time job to go to graduate school. She also had to balance school and caring for her family, which consisted
of her husband, Walter, two grown children, and two children still at home. Buford First was very supportive and
instrumental in Carol's ability to quit her job and pursue her education at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University.
Carol's family moved into what is now the Benson House. She was also hired as the Assistant Pastor of Buford First
and assisted Rev. Herb Owen in the pulpit and with visitation. During 1990, Carol began a Monday morning Bible Study
for women, which was regularly attended by about ten church members. Carol was a wonderful teacher and leader
to these women. The study and fellowship produced strong friendships and spiritual growth for those involved.
When Carol graduated with a Master of Divinity and was ordained in 1992, she was appointed to the
Kennesaw United Methodist Church as Assistant Pastor. The women who had been members of Carol's Bible Study formed the
Carol Scott Circle, so that they might continue to study and serve in Carol's honor. The circle is one which strives
to provide strong fellowship and service to our church and community.
Carol has moved to Indiana to care for her aging parents, but maintains a home in Winder, GA.
She has retired, but continues to serve as a part time minister. We stay in touch with Carol, inviting her to attend
our meetings occasionally. She led the women's retreat in 1993 and 1998, and she attended the UMW Christmas Brunch in
2006. She continues to be an inspiration and joy to those who know her.
